The clouds split open with rays of light cascading down to earth in awe-inspiring beauty.

This picture often brings to mind the Omnipotent presence of our awe-inspiring God.

But have they ever caused you to reflect on the many characteristics of God that pour out into our lives like nurturing beams of light from heaven? We rarely consider these until our prayers require the God of peace, the God of Justice, the God of forgiveness or provision. Do we ever acknowledge throughout the year that He is Emmanuel, God with us, or only during Christmas?

As a young child my concept of God was a wise, loving (obviously older) type man that may have looked like a cross between Father Time and Santa Claus. For a while it was enough. As my life became more complex, my need for a multi-faceted God increased. What about you? In my search, what I discovered was a treasure interwoven in the Word of God more wondrous than I could have imagined. It brings to mind a scene from the movie “Pollyanna” where she witnesses the refracted light bouncing off of glass prisms hanging from the light fixtures. She created a string of the prisms to experience mini rainbows reflecting all around the room. Exclaiming,”Isn’t it the most beautiful thing you have ever seen?”

We are encouraged in Philippians 2:14-15 to “do everything without complaining or arguing, so that (we) may become blameless and pure children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation. Then (we) will shine among them like stars in the sky.” Whenever I read that verse I think of God gazing down at this world that He created, that can seem so dark at times, and seeing us shining like stars! Maybe we are those prisms refracting the light of God into all of the world.

Won’t you join me on this 31 day journey as we discover the multi-faceted characteristics of God so that we can more effectively apply them to our lives. And maybe, just maybe the next time He gazes down He will exclaim, “Isn’t that the most beautiful thing you have ever seen?”
