First of all beautiful dreamer, I want to encourage you no matter how far-fetched the dreams in your heart may seem, (although they may not come to pass today or tomorrow), never give up on them because the future is still a blank canvas waiting for you to live and create. This particular story began over 30 years ago ~In fact, I was so tempted to start with “Once upon a time”… Because that is how profound the series of recent events in my life have felt. So many years ago, I had a dream – not the Martin Luther King Jr.-type. An actual, while you were sleeping – type of dream. A dream so vivid that it was brought to my remembrance time after time over the years, in such a way that I knew it was actually something that I was going to experience in real life. To understand the significance of part of the dream, I am going to share with you my experience with creating a Life Mission Statement. In my late 20s I was addicted to what is now Franklin Covey and I devoured all of their material in order to get my sanguine life in order . One of the first exercises was to write a personal life mission statement. (I share more about what it looks like to create your personal mission statement in my mini course The Quest.) One of the first questions was to identify a famous person that you could say influenced you, or had qualities that you admired or wanted to emulate. Then you would go on to identify the qualities that impacted you. For example, were they values or habits and how they could be implemented into your life. Remembering that this was a few decades ago, I immediately wrote down Mother Teresa. She had been a great influence on my goals and someone I had admired for many years. (Disclaimer, I also wrote down Princess Diana, deciding that although I really wanted to make an impact and change the world, I couldn’t see myself wearing the same outfit every day. I definitely wanted to remain fashionable.) Back to my dream, ~ In it I was actually in front of Mother Teresa‘s shelter in Calcutta, India. I was barefoot in the dirt, dancing in a circle with several young girls. Someone questioned if I was afraid to be there. I assumed they were referring to the colony of lepers that Mother Teresa attended to. But even in the midst of my deep slumber, I had no fear, I knew I was meant to be there and all I felt was joy and love. Bringing India to MeThis led to my “adopting” (for only $20/month) a World Vision child from India because that was as close as I could find to connect to my dream. (I went on to sponsor several more over the years as they grew and graduated from the program – I highly recommend investing in the lives of the next generation.) Not long into my sponsorship I received the World Vision magazine, and inside was a full page photo of girls dancing barefoot, in a circle in India. The caption read – “You turned my mourning into dancing” (Ps. 30:11). I had no idea how powerful that scripture would become to me personally in the years to come. I taped the page to my mirror. Over the years I connected with people and opportunities that I kept believing would be an open door for my predestined trip to India. But they never came to pass. In fact, I just found a journal entry from the summer of 2022 where a delegation of leaders from India actually came to my office building. As I shared about our Mentor program and training one by one they invited me to come to India to train their staff. I absolutely would love to go to Calcutta, and Bangalore to train for these organizations. But that was not meant to be either. And then a few months ago, when I was tasked with choosing from 52 world-wide mission trips as part of an online class that I was taking, the only one that jumped off of the page and made my heart beat within my chest was 2 weeks in India. It was my first choice. Again, my mind resounded with the question – is this it? I’ve had so many opportunities, but nothing ever seemed to align. I had learned not only to be patient, but not to preemptively get my hopes up to avoid disappointment. Can you relate?Have you ever desired something so bad that you know it was meant to be, and yet time after time it feels like the door is slammed in your face when all of the indications seemed to shout otherwise? If so, you can surely understand the nerve-racking days that followed. Eventually, I received the email that my first choice was approved. I had mixed emotions of joy with fear of the unknown. The following months were filled with zoom meetings of preparation, applying for visa and all of the other things that accompany a huge out of the country adventure. This is something that I want you to remember more than anything, just because you have confirmation of a big dream it doesn’t guarantee it will happen overnight. Even when it begins, there are still lots of planning and action items of preparation that may take weeks, months or even years to fulfill. To say that my trip to India was a dream come true is an understatement. For over two weeks I experienced the adventure of actually going to the Mother Teresa home in Kolkata and serving in a small way where one of the most influential role models in my life had lived and served. I danced with young girls barefoot, not even realizing my dream was literally coming to pass. I made friendships that will last a lifetime and I know deep in my heart, like I knew the first time ~ India, I will be back. Beautiful dreamer it doesn’t matter how insurmountable the dream you have in your heart may seem. Dreams do come true!
